PRODIGAL THEATRE SON RETURNS

So here's a little plot twist. After a decade-plus of focusing on fiction and the Fantasticademy book series, I've now circled back to theatre. Many years ago, I began my artistic journey writing fiction and music (high school), then switched to acting, directing, and playwriting (college and several years after), then went back to fiction (early adulthood to now middle-aged), and today, returned to theatre. A new play idea culminated pretty quickly, incorporating thoughts about social divisions and their intersection with advanced artificial intelligence, and I had to pursue it. The result is a dark yet hopeful sci-fi tragicomedy called "The Firekeepers." The logline is this:

In post-apocalyptic America ravaged by weaponized artificial intelligence, forty-year-old Bryn Jones survives alone in a cave. Forming a bold plan to restore humanity, she invites local refugees to share stories around the fire. But rebuilding a civil society under the treacherous eyes of machines comes with an even greater threat to the survivors—themselves. A full-length drama about social division and what it means to be human.

So there it is. I never know where the next story will come from, but for now, I really miss the stage. I've been submitting the script to theatres and contests to see what might come of it, and if you want to learn more, you can read about it on my New Play Exchange profile. Wish me luck, and have a wonderful summer!

September Update

Well, life threw a curve ball since the release of Edentown in the form of wanting to switch day jobs, so I've gone back to school to pursue a degree in medical imaging. This should wrap up in June of 2016. Writing-wise, this translates to a dramatic loss of time and a delay in published novels. In the meantime, though, I'm switching genres a bit, into middle grade fiction. I'll release more details as the plan comes along. It's different than any project I've been involved with, but I have to admit, it's a great book for kids (and grown-ups too). On the personal side, it also makes me feel like I'm still involved in writing despite being covered up with homework. Everybody wins! More details soon. Cheers.
